We're making our way down the mountain. The sun is shining & the roads are clear. There's 1 bus filled with luggage.

The Last Night

Today we finally had a gorgeous day without the wind. Groups continued with their classes and hikes. For lunch they served philly-cheesesteak sandwiches and chili. This evening was another delicious Italian meal with a fresh pasta bar.

Tonight they will pack and then bring their bags out when they go to breakfast. After breakfast, they'll have one final class session before saying goodbye and getting on the buses for our journey home.

We'll make calls from the road to let parents know about our estimated arrival time.

Please try to have someone at school to pick up your camper as they're looking forward to coming home and sleeping in their own beds.

Wednesday Post. The wind has interrupted our internet service so this post comes via a cellphone text message. The sun was out today..

Tuesday Thaw

Apparently, we timed camp perfectly for winter weather. Today was a bit warmer and the frost on the trees began to melt. The sun came out for a bit before the fog rolled back in.

After a delicious warm breakfast this morning, several groups went for a day hike while other groups took part in archery, rockwall climbing, and rope climbing.

Tonight for dinner, half of the campers were treated to a fresh pasta bar and chicken. The other half were able to eat spaghetti and chicken and will get to have the pasta bar on Thursday. It was pretty impressive.

After dinner, the students spent some time in their cabins and were getting ready for evening activities which included a night hike for some and karaoke for others.

Getting Settled

The rain let up and the sun is beginning to peek through, but it is
cold. The kids ate sandwiches and soup for lunch and are getting
situated in their cabins.

The ride up was smooth and quick and the movie kept their attention.

I will try to post nightly with a recap of some of the days activities.
The students are in various groups and so will doing different events.

All Summer in a Day

Today in class we read a story by Ray Bradbury about a school on Venus. As we read it, we learned of a student named Margot who is an outsider because of her differences. The other students treat her poorly and in fact do something really mean.

How do you think Margot felt after being treated so poorly? What are ways we can reach out to students who might be different from us?

September 11th

Today is September the 11th and in class we discussed some of the events that affected our country and world.  We discussed some of the reasons behind the attack and tried to understand why people would want to cause others harm.

A Great First Day!!

Today was a terrific first day and I am excited about the year that we are going to have. It was a full day with new introductions and new friends and of course, new school supplies! The class went out for P.E. with the coaches and then had a session with one of our music teachers.

The year promises to be a great one!

For tonight, students should be completing the About Me rough draft, working on jerseys, and gathering any old magazines that might be used for a collage. Parents, you've been given the task of filling out all of those forms. Thanks for taking the time to do this. It really helps us

First Day of School

The lists have been posted and we're down to just a day before the first day of school.

I'm excited about the year that lies ahead.

Inevitably, you'll have many questions for me before school starts and once the year gets underway. One common question is what supplies do I need? For writing, you will need a spiral notebook (70-100 pages) and an accordian file with 3-4 sections.
For science you'll need another spiral notebook.

As far as suggested supplies, you may want to get a USB drive with 512K-1GB of memory. Don't spend more than $25 for these as stores often run specials.

Upcoming School Year

Rome is one of the many ancient civilizations we will be studying in 6th grade. I had the opportunity to visit several of these sites this summer and have captured images for our study. This picture is of a statue in Rome that depicts Romulus and Remus, the mythical characters who founded Rome.

Many of you may know that I have moved classrooms to Room 10. I look forward to meeting you and look forward to an exciting year ahead.

On My Way Home from Venice

I'm at the airport in Venice waiting to begin my journey home.

Venice is magical with its canals and gondolas and winding streets. It's known for its glass and masks.

The past few weeks have been fast and furious, but I'm so excited to have been to so many places with so much history. It's evident that we in America have been trying to imitate many of the great aspects of European design.

I will post additional photos once I return.

Athens

Athens is home to the Acropolis and the Parthenon and was an important city-state during the Greek Empire and still remains an important city in Greece. The ruins here are breathtaking and the work involved in restoring and preserving these treasures seems painstaking. The city was recently the host for the summer Olympics and as a result was given a makeover. Near the Acropolis, the Plaka is a busy area with shops and restaurants full of life.

Santorini

Santorini is an island in the Aegean Sea and is believed to be the site of the lost civilization of Atlantis. The island is in the shape of a crescent and forms the outer edge of a volcano. Because of its uneven elevations, towns are built on cliffs and the views are amazing. There are several black beaches and even a red beach with reddish volcanic rock and sand.

Naples and Pompeii

Today I went to Pompeii and Naples. Naples is famous for being the birthplace of pizza and it was delicious. My time in Pompeii was amazing as the stories we studied were captured in time by the eruption of the volcano. What was fascinating was to see the advanced culture of the people 2000 years ago. The streets were named and each house had numbers; there were pipes for plumbing and restaurants for people to meet and share meals. The casts of the people trapped were eerie as you could see the expressions on their faces at their moment of death.

Florence and Pisa

Florence and Pisa were both beautiful towns to visit. Pisa, of course, has the leaning tower, while Florence is considered the heart of the Renaissance and is home to many great works of art.

I have been having trouble getting the pictures to load using the ship's internet connection. If I can't get them to post, I will update the posts with pictures once I'm able.

Rome

Rome. What can I say? It's called the Eternal City. It was the heart of the Roman Empire and is home to the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. It was incredible to see buildings built 2000 years ago. One can imagine life taking place as you walk through the old Forum and ancient streets. Rome today is a bustling big city, but amidst the chaos lie some of the world's greatest historical treasures.

On to Naples and Pompeii tomorrow.

Nice and Eze

My time in Barcelona was wonderful, but the time came for me to board the Celebrity Millennium for our first port. We docked in Villefranche just south of Nice. I rode up to the top of the hill and went on a perfume factory tour. I also spent time wandering through Nice which has a history as being an ancient port and is now a popular resort destination. One of the great buildings I saw was the justice building. Notice the great Greek-style columns.

Tomorrow, Florence and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Barcelona

Barcelona is a beautiful city set right on the Mediterranean Sea. The amazing architecture reminds me of being in New York. The people are friendly and helpful. There are all kinds of sidewalk cafes where you can get a cappucino and pastry. The other picture is of the Sagrada Familia, a temple begun in the late 1800's by the architect Gaudi and still under construction. One interesting site I saw today was part of an original Roman wall built at the time of the Roman Empire.

I board the ship on Saturday and will be heading to Nice. Stay tuned!

Frankfurt Airport

I've just flown from Chicago and have landed in Frankfort, Germany. The weather is warm and it's interesting to see people from different cultures and to hear languages other than English over the loud speaker. I fly next to Barcelona.

Happy Start of Summer!

I have been working at Nordstrom for the past two weekends and am now preparing for my journey to Europe. I was taken to Germany once as an infant, but this will be my first real trip to Europe. I am excited about being able to visit many of the places we spent a lot of time talking and learning about this past year.

Hopefully my experiences will enhance and extend our collective learning.
